Home

Welcome to my homepage! I'm Liam. I live in Amsterdam.

On this website you can read about me, my academic exploits, and things I find interesting. I made this website using Emacs org-mode with some simple HTML and CSS.

This website is also the home of my blog, where I (plan to) talk about all sorts of things: including Emacs, maths, tabletop RPGs, music, keyboards, linux, and so on, and so on…

I've already made my first post! You can find it here.

About

  • I am a PhD candidate at Universiteit Leiden, working on logic, algebra, and coalgebra as they pertain to computer science.

To read more about my academic background and research interests, you can check out my academic page.

  • I have also worked as a web developer for social good, at My Media Creative.
  • I am a Free Software enthusiast. In particular NixOS, self-hosting, and Emacs.

Blogroll

Here is a curated collection of some of my personal favourite posts from some of my favourite blogs.

  • The Indie Web
  • The SPICY Web
  • You Need a Portfolio (Jared White)

Why do we often only consume media chronologically? Think Twitter, Reddit, Instagram. Does a piece of media lose its value once something else has been made to cover it up in the timeline?

  • The Past is Not True (Derek Sivers)

The past is important, it makes us who we are. But we are in control of how we see it: little misunderstandings or interactions can over time come to dominate you. A short, beautiful story about how human connection can correct for this.

  • Drawing the Line: Shared Narration in TTRPGs (Troypress)
  • Deep Dive: Stonetop (Indie Game Reading Club)

Stonetop is the RPG I'm currently spending most of my energy on. It's the first sytem I've played where I really feel like system mastery is an attainable and desirable goal. This post does assume some familiarity with Powered by the Apocalypse games, though.

  • The Desktop Metaphor: Once Awesome, Now Hindrance (Karl Voit)

Thinking critically about the epistemology of computing in a practical setting is a niche interest of mine. Here's a great little taster!

  • Linux, Unix Philosophy and why programs are just filters

Another version of what I mention just above. The UNIX-like terminal is a big step away from being chained to the desktop/folder metaphor, but just because it's a "better" alternative doesn't mean we shouldn't be critical.
